IDPs from Serêkaniyê urge safe return amid harsh living conditions

Huriya Deham Suleiman, a displaced woman from the village of Lilan in Serêkaniyê’s countryside, said: “With some residents attempting individual returns to their homes and villages, I also went back to my village. However, there were no signs of life — the houses are destroyed, and the village is still filled with landmines.”

She added: “What we want is a safe return to our villages. We have been living in real tragedy inside the camp for years, especially with the suspension of aid by organizations.”

“We want to return safely to our homes and receive support for reconstruction after seven years of destruction,” she said.

For his part, Faisal al-Turki from the village of al-Tawila noted that “the suffering of camp residents is worsening day by day, particularly with the halt of humanitarian assistance to the displaced.”

He stressed that the villages are no longer fit for habitation, yet residents refuse to remain in the camp and are seeking a safe and dignified return along with the rebuilding of their homes.

“Our villages are in a dire condition and uninhabitable, yet we can no longer endure life in the camp. What we want is a safe and dignified return to our villages and homes, which we are ready to rebuild,” he said.

Moreover, displaced resident Aboud al-Lami highlighted the severe hardships faced by camp residents, especially during the winter season, when flooding and deteriorating tent conditions have compounded their suffering amid the suspension of aid.

He emphasized that the demands of the displaced are unified: to return to their villages after the withdrawal of armed factions from the city and surrounding areas. “We are ready to return at this very moment to escape the tragic situation we are living in,” he said.

Concluding the testimonies, Jassem Hamad from the village of al-Ahras stated that the camp has become a disaster zone following the cutoff of aid. He added that his village is completely destroyed, and what residents seek is a safe and dignified return, with guarantees that the roads are free from threats.
