IDPs from Serekaniye: Mercenaries block our return

Amid the ongoing crimes committed by the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries against the residents of occupied Syrian areas, the suffering of thousands of families forcibly displaced from the occupied city of Serekaniye continues. These families reside in camps and shelter centers and are still barred from returning to their homes due to insecurity and mercenary control over their cities.

Six years of forced displacement have turned the camps into places lacking the most basic necessities of life. Residents face harsh humanitarian conditions inside dilapidated tents, amid freezing cold and diseases that threaten the lives of children and the elderly.

“We Live as If We Are in the Open”

Displaced woman Zakia Al-Abdullah, a resident of Washokani Camp, said: “For six years we have been in this camp, and the tents have not been replaced until today. Sitting inside the tents is like sitting in the open air. When it rains, water leaks inside the tents, and children and residents suffer from diseases.”

She added: “We want to return to our cities, but today there is no safety due to the presence of mercenaries in our towns. What we want is to leave this camp and be freed from its suffering.”

“We Are Tired of Staying in the Camp and Want a Safe Return to Our Homes”

Similarly, displaced man Jassem Al-Mohammad spoke about the suffering they endure in the camp, describing it as not a life at all. He said they face great difficulties throughout all seasons, noting that their situation has become tragic due to the cold and worn-out tents.

He added: “The cold is severe, the tents are torn, and children and residents cannot keep warm day or night. We are tired of staying here, and all we wish for is a safe return to our homes and houses.”

“We Cannot Return Because Our Cities Are Not Liberated”

Displaced woman Rifaa Al-Ahmad also pointed to the unbearable conditions inside the camp, saying they want to return to their homes. She explained that the tents fill with water during rainfall, forcing them to sit inside flooded tents, in addition to their complete deterioration.

Rifaa Al-Ahmad confirmed that they cannot return because their cities are not liberated and remain under mercenary control, calling for a safe return to their cities.

Washokani Camp, south of Al-Hasakah city, hosts around 17,500 people from 2,360 families, living in difficult humanitarian conditions amid worn-out tents and severe cold. The presence of Turkish occupation mercenaries prevents their return, making their demands for a safe return increasingly urgent.
