Hopes of residents for New Year: safe return, guaranteed rights, Syria seeking peace

With the New Year 2026 drawing near, Syrians’ hopes are renewed that it will bring peace and stability after years of hardship and war. It is a new year opening its doors to the aspirations of a people exhausted by crises, yet still clinging to hope for a safe and dignified life.

In this context, residents of the city of al-Hasakah in al-Jazira Canton shared their ambitions and messages for the coming year, hoping it will mark the beginning of a new phase of security, return, and the realization of rights.

The Dream of Return and a Syria Without Wars

Delo Mohammed Ali, displaced from the city of Ras al-Ain and currently residing in al-Hasakah, said: “We aspire to a free Syria without wars and conflicts, and for the suffering endured by Syria’s components killing and displacement to come to an end, and for there to be no more camps or displacement suffering in the country.”

He added: “We hope that all displaced people will return to their homes and lands, that we move toward genuine peace in Syria, and that Syria will be free.”

Safe Return and International Guarantees

For his part, citizen Mohammed Farhan stressed that his foremost hope is the safe return of the displaced to their homes and lands under international guarantees. He emphasized the necessity for all Syrian components to live together in a spirit of brotherhood and peace, while preserving the rights of all components.

Farhan also pointed to the importance of re-drafting the Syrian constitution in a way that guarantees the rights of all components, expressing hope that the new year will mark the beginning of coexistence away from strife and sectarianism, as Syrians once lived.

A Different Year for Syria

Meanwhile, Abdul Ghani Dawoud, a resident of the Mufti neighborhood in al-Hasakah, said: “In the new year, I want all Syrians to live together in peace and security, and for this year to be a different one for Syria.”

Security and Improved Living Conditions

Citizen Anwar al-Assaf from the Nasra neighborhood in al-Hasakah affirmed that security is their primary demand above all else, expressing hope that goodness and peace will prevail across Syria and that economic conditions which have heavily burdened citizens will improve.

Kurdish Rights in the New Constitution

For his part, Hakim Rafi from al-Hasakah congratulated all Syrian components on the occasion of the New Year, giving special mention to the Kurdish component, which has long suffered greatly. He noted that thanks to the sacrifices of the martyrs, the world has come to recognize these components, and strong bonds have formed among them.

Rafi called for enshrining the rights of the Kurdish component in the new Syrian constitution, and for peace and security to prevail among all sects and religions in Syria.

Ending Injustice and Supporting the Autonomous Administration

Citizen Mohammed Ahmed from the al-Salhiya neighborhood expressed his hope that the new year will bring an end to injustice and oppression, that security and peace will prevail in Syria, and that Syrians will not be subjected again to the injustices of the past.

He also called on the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria to intensify efforts to improve the beauty and well-being of the region and to provide greater support to citizens across various sectors.

Reassurance and Peace for All Syrians

Meanwhile, Jihan Suleiman from the al-Talae’ neighborhood said: “Our hopes for the new year are to live with reassurance in the new Syria,” extending her New Year’s greetings to all Syrian components.

In the same context, Nadia Suleiman affirmed that the aspiration of the Syrian people is to live in peace and security and for Kurds to achieve their rights and aspirations. She added: “It is essential to preserve the gains of the revolution for which Syrians paid the price of thousands of martyrs, because today we live in peace and security thanks to their sacrifices.”

Despite their diverse backgrounds, the hopes of al-Hasakah’s residents converge on a single dream: a safe, just, and coexisting Syria one that guarantees rights, honors sacrifices, and opens a new chapter titled peace and stability.
