Today, southern Kurdistan witnessed an event described by observers as historic, where a group of fighters from the Kurdistan Liberation Movement destroyed their weapons in a symbolic ceremony, responding to the call of leader Abdullah Ocalan for peace and a democratic society. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that the fighters burned some of their weapons in what it described as “a significant step toward ending the conflict in Turkey,” while The New York Times noted that “Kurdish fighters burned their weapons in a move toward peace.”

For its part, Al-Monitor considered the burning of the weapons by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters as representing a new turning point in the peace process.

Reuters stated that the disarmament ceremony represents “a shift in the PKK’s transition from armed rebellion to democratic politics,” while the UAE’s The National newspaper reported that the fighters “began discarding their weapons in a symbolic ceremony aimed at opening a new chapter with Ankara.”

Russia Today titled its report, quoting a party leader: “We are freely disposing of our weapons as a sign of goodwill, and we are determined to make the peace process succeed.”

Sky News reported that the PKK confirmed after handing over the weapons that “the struggle will continue through legal and political means,” while the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat described the event as “a symbolic surrender of their weapons near Sulaymaniyah.”

Lebanon’s An-Nahar newspaper reported that about 30 fighters participated in the weapon-burning process, while Okaz newspaper headlined: “After nearly 40 years of armed operations, the PKK officially disarms.”

The New Arab newspaper noted that the weapon destruction took place in a cave located in a remote mountainous area in northern Iraq.
