Helen Umit: Implementing PKK Congress decision  depends on changing state structure

Freedom Movement member Helen Umit emphasized that the decisions of the 12th PKK Congress cannot be implemented unless the Turkish state makes genuine changes to its political and legal structure. She said, "How can a democratic political project be implemented in the absence of legal reforms and the prevention of free political activity? If democracy is not allowed, how can we move forward?"

Medya Haber conducted a special interview with Freedom Movement member Helen Umit, discussing the most significant developments following the "Peace and Democratic Society" call issued by Leader Abdullah Ocalan on February 27, as well as a comprehensive assessment of the work of the 12th Congress of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

At the beginning of her remarks, Helen Umit expressed her deep gratitude, on behalf of herself and her comrades, to the leader. She renewed her loyalty to the blood of the martyrs and respectfully remembered Comrades Rıza Altun and Fuat, whose martyrdom was announced during the last congress. She added, "We pledge to the martyrs once again to continue the struggle and achieve the goals for which they sacrificed."

She also congratulated the Kurdish people on the occasion of Eid al-Adha and praised the steadfastness of the fedayeen, both men and women, recalling the martyr Zilan, whom she described as "a symbol of sacrifice and devotion in June, the month of the fedayeen."

Helin Umit spoke about the importance of the 12th Congress, noting that it represents a strategic turning point in the party's history. She said, "Since its first Congress, the PKK has been keen to chart a clear historical path and implement it practically on the ground. The latest Congress lays the foundation for a new phase with important implications for the peoples of Kurdistan, the region, and humanity as a whole."

She emphasized that the Congress remains the subject of widespread discussion within the movement and its people, and is being evaluated in light of the political report presented on behalf of the Leader. She emphasized the need to understand the nature of the current phase and implement the decisions issued by the Congress with precision and responsibility.

She explained that engagement with the Congress’ outcomes is not limited to the party's ranks alone, but extends to the people, the movement's supporters, and even its opponents. She added, "Everyone is wondering about the circumstances that led to the congress, the decisions it came out with, and their future impact. This in itself reflects the importance of what was decided
