Health sector in Sweida on brink of collapse Due to Blockade

Sweida’s health sector is witnessing a severe breakdown as a result of the blockade imposed by the Transitional Government. Comprehensive clinics have reduced their operations to just two days a week, while patients face acute shortages of medicines and medical supplies.

Healthcare workers also struggle with transportation difficulties and delayed salaries, compounding the suffering of residents amid the ongoing economic crisis.

According to local media sources, one staff member reported that the radiology department has come to a complete halt due to the depletion of developing materials, stressing that resumption depends on the provision of both the “developer” and the “fixer.”

Meanwhile, laboratory testing supplies are entirely unavailable. The crisis extends further to a shortage of medical staff and essential supplies across multiple departments.

The plight has also reached the workers themselves, who face major obstacles in commuting due to a lack of fuel, coupled with delays in salary disbursement that have left some without income, in addition to low wages that do not match the growing burdens.

Previously, these medical facilities distributed aid-provided medicines across 22 health centers to cover the needs of thousands of residents and displaced persons, offering free healthcare amid economic collapse. However, the latest blockade has brought these efforts to an almost total halt.

Statistics indicate that of 110 essential medicines, only 55 remain available—barely half of the required amount. This has further exacerbated the suffering of patients, particularly those who travel long distances at rising transportation costs, only to find clinic doors closed or vital medications missing.
