Gunmen kill bookstore owner in Homs

A man in his sixties was killed inside his bookstore after being shot by gunmen in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of Homs, amid continued security chaos and lawlessness in areas under the control of Syria’s transitional government.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a 68-year-old man was killed this morning. The victim, Abdul Aziz Darwish (Abu Mudar), was shot dead inside his bookstore in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood—Tughlab Street, near Hattin School—in the city of Homs.

According to details, masked gunmen entered the bookstore under the pretext of making a purchase, then opened fire on the victim, killing him instantly, before fleeing to an unknown destination.

Sources confirmed that the victim was not affiliated with, nor involved in, any political or military activity; his work was limited to running his bookstore and serving local residents.

This crime comes amid the continued occurrence of sectarian-motivated crimes in areas under the control of Syria’s transitional government, alongside the ongoing failure to criminalize sectarian rhetoric and practices.
