Germany: Syrian tried on charges of killing 70 prisoners in Syria

The trial of a Syrian man began in Germany on charges of killing and torturing 70 prisoners in Damascus between 2011 and 2012, as part of crimes against humanity cases according to the German Public Prosecution.

On Monday, the trial of a 48-year-old Syrian citizen began in Germany on charges related to torture, murder, and committing crimes against humanity in Syria.

The Higher Regional Court in Koblenz stated that the accused faces charges of responsibility for the killing of 70 prisoners, in addition to his participation in interrogations described as being characterized by violence and ill-treatment.

According to the German Public Prosecution, the accused worked as a guard in a prison affiliated with the Syrian intelligence services in Damascus during the years 2011 and 2012, where he was suspected of involvement in torturing detainees using beatings and electric shocks.

The indictment indicates that at least 70 detainees died as a result of these violations and conditions of detention, and the accused has been in pretrial detention since his arrest in May 2025.
