Funeral procession of martyr leader Nuradin Sofi heads from Tirbespiye to Qamishlo

In a majestic scene befitting the greatness of his sacrifices, the funeral procession of the leader of the Rojava Revolution — North and East Syria, Martyr Nuradin Sofi, departed this morning from Derik hospital, accompanied by thousands of mourners from the Jazira Canton and his relatives. The procession is heading toward the city of Qamishlo, passing through Girkê Legê, Çil Agha, and Tirbespiye, where crowds lined the roadsides to bid farewell to one of the most prominent symbols of the struggle in North and East Syria.

In every city the procession passed, the reception was warm with chants honoring the martyrs, such as “Martyrs are alive,” “With our soul and blood, we sacrifice for you, martyr Sofi,” and “Martyrs remain eternal in our hearts.” Shops were closed in mourning for the martyr’s soul in most cities and towns of the Jazira Canton.

In Girkê Legê city, hundreds of locals including Kurds, Arabs, and internal security forces gathered at the eastern entrance, carrying the body of martyr Nuradin Sofi on their shoulders to the western entrance, expressing their gratitude and appreciation for the martyr’s struggles.

In Çil Agha city, the martyr’s body was received by hundreds of Kurds and Arabs, carried on shoulders from the city entrance. From there, the procession headed towards the exit of the city towards Tirbespiye. Women, youth, men, and elders chanted loudly in one voice chanting, “Martyrs are eternal... Sofi is immortal in our hearts.” 

At 15:13, the body of martyr Nuradin Sofi arrived in Tirbespiye, where he was welcomed by the city’s residents including Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, Yazidis, as well as security and military forces. Attendees raised his picture and chanted slogans commemorating his memory. His body was carried on shoulders to the central market square amid a complete closure of shops.

In a speech on behalf of the Democratic Islam Conference, Mal Hawker Hassan highlighted Nuradin Sofi’s more than two decades of struggle for the Kurdish and Kurdistan cause. Thousands of locals joined the procession between Tribespiye and Qamishlo, alongside representatives from the Democratic Autonomous Administration, political parties, and tribal elders, affirming unity and solidarity in bidding farewell to the leader who dedicated his life to freedom and dignity.

At the entrance to Qamishlo, thousands prepared to receive the body of martyr Nuradin Sofi, gathering with raised pictures of the martyr while chanting slogans like “With our soul and blood, we sacrifice for you, martyr,” and “Martyrs are our spiritual leaders,” demonstrating loyalty to the symbols of the revolution.

After arrival in Qamishlo, the body will be transferred to the Martyrs' Families Council center, where an official farewell ceremony is scheduled at 17:00 at the Martyrs of March 12 Stadium, including speeches by representatives of institutions and communities, before transferring the body to the martyr’s cemetery Dalill Sarokhan for burial.

The People’s Defense Forces announced on August 11: “The heroic son of the Kurdish people, the professional revolutionary, and follower of the path of leader Akid, leader of the Freedom Revolution in Rojava and the people of North and East Syria, Nuradin Sofi, was martyred in an enemy attack on April 6, 2021.”
