Farmers in Tel Tamr protest against new wheat delivery system

Protesting the new wheat procurement system approved by the interim government in Syria via an electronic platform, dozens of farmers in Tel Tamr staged a sit-in today in front of the Agriculture Institution building. They called for its cancellation or amendment to ensure easier marketing of the crop.

Participants in the sit-in held banners expressing their rejection of the new procedures, stating that the use of the electronic platform imposes additional complications on farmers and delays the wheat delivery process, at a time when the current season requires fast marketing and procurement to preserve crop quality.

Several farmers explained that the new mechanism does not take into account their needs or the realities of agricultural areas. They noted that many of them face difficulties in registering and obtaining the necessary appointments to deliver their crops, which could negatively affect the agricultural season and increase their financial burdens.

The protesters called on the relevant authorities to reconsider the adopted procurement mechanism and implement more flexible procedures that ensure direct and fast receipt of the crop, while safeguarding the rights of farmers who depend on the wheat season as their main source of income.

This sit-in comes amid growing dissatisfaction among farmers as wheat marketing operations begin, with ongoing calls for urgent solutions to support the agricultural season and reduce the challenges faced by producers.

The new wheat procurement mechanism in Syria relies on an electronic platform launched by the Syrian Grain Corporation to organize crop delivery operations during the 2026 season.

Among its main drawbacks are weak internet access in rural areas, which makes registration or obtaining appointments difficult for some farmers, delays in assigning appointments which may leave crops stored for longer periods after harvest, and difficulty using the platform for elderly farmers or those unfamiliar with digital services.
