EU welcomes agreement between Interim Govt, Autonomous Administration

In a statement, the EU welcomed the agreement concluded between the Interim Government and the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, urging that it be implemented in good faith and on the basis of consensus.

EU External Action Service spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said that the European bloc considers the achievement of a full cessation of hostilities a fundamental step to allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance, ensure the protection of civilians, and create suitable conditions for the return of internally displaced persons to their areas.

El Anouni stressed the importance of all parties adhering to the terms of the agreement, noting that de-escalation represents a necessary entry point for addressing the escalating humanitarian and security challenges in Syria.

The EU also called for ensuring the security of camps and detention centers holding ISIS mercenaries, and for serious efforts to prevent the group’s return or the reactivation of its cells, amid ongoing concerns over the exploitation of instability resulting from attacks by Interim Government factions on Rojava and North and East Syria.

The EU’s position comes amid growing international calls to support de-escalation pathways, strengthen political solutions in Rojava, and condemn attacks by Interim Government factions on areas of Rojava and North and East Syria.
