Druze leadership dismisses Suwayda ceasefire claims

In a strongly worded statement issued today, the Spiritual Leadership of the Druze Unitarian Muslims affirmed its full support for the resilience of the people of Suwayda, praising what it described as the "spirit of heroism and dignity" among the youth defending their land, honor, and faith against what it called "armed terrorist and criminal gangs".

The statement, issued by the Spiritual Leadership on July 16, 2025, stated that these groups "came to eradicate our existence, committing the most heinous crimes, including killing, looting, and burning homes, hospitals, and places of worship, without regard for religion, conscience, custom, or humanity."

The Spiritual Leadership emphasized "the necessity of continuing legitimate defense and fighting until the complete liberation of the governorate’s territory without any conditions," describing it as "a national, humanitarian, and moral duty with no compromise."

The statement called on the remaining armed groups affiliated with the transitional government in Syria to "lay down their weapons and surrender," noting that those who do so "will be under the protection of our heroic youth and will not be humiliated or mistreated," highlighting the commitment to the values and ethics that distinguish the Druze community.

The Spiritual Leadership confirmed that there is no "agreement, negotiation, or authorization" with these groups, which it described as "falsely calling themselves a government."

It warned that any individual or entity engaging or reaching agreements with these parties independently "will face legal and social accountability without exception or leniency."

This statement came after the Syrian news agency "SANA" reported, citing a source in the Ministry of Interior, that an agreement had been reached to cease fire in Suwayda. The agency added that the agreement included deploying security checkpoints in the city and fully integrating it into the Syrian state.

The Syrian Druze leader Yusuf Jarbou said today that Suwayda’s notables had reached an agreement with Damascus to cease fire, adding: "The agreement stipulates the deployment of internal security and police checkpoints from the state, with police personnel from Suwayda and surrounding areas."
