The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Louay Mohammed Tharouf was detained in late May, when General Security forces arrested him near his home in the Damascus suburbs. His family subsequently lost contact with him throughout his detention.

His family received his body in the village of Ras Al-Ain in the Jableh countryside after being informed of his death in custody.

According to the Observatory, the family was told that he had died of a heart attack. However, relatives noticed bruising on his body, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
