Delegation from Popular Initiative in Qamishlo met with UN

Today, the Popular Initiative in Qamishli delivered a statement in front of the UNHCR building in the city, in support of the outcomes of the General Assembly of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), which called for the recognition of the Kurds as a nation, the support of Kurdish unity, and the safeguarding of their rights.

Following the statement, a delegation from the initiative submitted a petition to the United Nations office.

After submitting the petition, the delegation answered journalists’ questions in front of the building. A member of the Popular Initiative in Qamishlo, Sharif Khalili, speaking on behalf of the delegation, said: “We have called on the United Nations to recognize the Kurdish people and their rights. We also demanded the allocation of a seat for the Kurdish people, who number more than 70 million and have lived on their land for thousands of years. They, in turn, expressed their satisfaction and thanked us for our peaceful stance. They promised to forward our demands to their headquarters in Damascus, which will then raise them to the UN leadership. They also affirmed that all peoples have the right to self-determination, and that your demand is a legitimate one.”

Meanwhile, popular initiatives in the cities of Amuda, Qamishlo, Tirbespiye, Çil Agha, Çil Agha, Derik, and Tel Tamr in the Jazira region issued a joint statement today regarding the outcomes of the General Assembly of the KNK held on 6–7 June, which called for the legal recognition of the Kurdish people and for ensuring their place within the UN.
