Dean, Law Faculty at Aleppo University survived assassination attempt

The Dean of the Law Faculty at the Aleppo University survived an assassination attempt in the Idlib countryside. This attack, the second of its kind targeting university officials in Syria in the past 72 hours, is considered a source of growing concern in academic circles.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Aleppo, Muslim al-Youssef, was subjected to an assassination attempt using a hand grenade on Monday in the city of Khan Shaykhun in the southern countryside of Idlib. The attack was carried out by unknown assailants who fled after the attack.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the targeted dean managed to leave the site of the attack before the grenade exploded, suggesting that the attack was motivated by personal disputes with residents of his neighborhood, stressing that this was not the first time he had been targeted by them.

This incident comes days after a similar incident witnessed at Damascus University, as on October 12, three armed young men, believed to be the brothers of a female doctoral student, stormed the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, assaulted a faculty staff member, and then proceeded to destroy the office's contents and wreak havoc inside the building, causing panic among students and staff.

The two incidents sparked widespread resentment in academic circles, with calls for tightening security measures on campus to ensure the safety of faculty staff and students, in addition to protecting the sanctity of educational institutions from similar attacks.
