A spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry announced that the Damascus authority expressed initial approval to accept Syrians deported from Germany. This followed a meeting in Damascus between German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, her Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner, and the Interior Minister of the Damascus authority, Anas Khattab.

Despite this development, the spokesperson clarified that “no concrete agreements have been reached yet, and no timeline for deportations has been set.” She emphasized that the federal government prefers voluntary return for refugees but is also aiming to expedite the deportation of those who commit crimes or are classified as “security threats.”
