Damascus Criminal Court sentences Wasim al-Assad to death

The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus issued a death sentence against Wasim al-Assad after convicting him of committing murder, torture, kidnapping, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The court also ordered the seizure of his movable and immovable assets in favor of the state treasury.

Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan said during the sentencing session that investigations and evidence had established Wasim al-Assad’s involvement in forming irregular armed groups at the direction of Brig. Gen. Ghiyath Dala. The groups targeted civilian areas in Eastern Ghouta and committed massacres against civilians, particularly in the town of al-Malihah.

The court also established the involvement of an armed group affiliated with him in attacking a commercial shop in the town of Jaramana, stealing its contents and kidnapping its owner because of his opposition to the former regime. He was also found to have been involved in the kidnapping and killing of Syrian citizens in several areas.

The court convicted Wasim al-Assad of the felony of intentional and premeditated killing of more than one person, in addition to torture crimes classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes. It also ordered the seizure of all his movable and immovable assets for the benefit of the state treasury.
