Curriculum update nearing completion

In 2024, the Curriculum Institution of the Autonomous Administration launched a comprehensive process to revise and update the curricula for primary, middle, and secondary education levels.

According to the approved plan, the first phase involved updating the curricula for grades 1, 4, 7, and 10, which were introduced during the 2024–2025 academic year. The second phase covered grades 2, 5, 8, and 11, and the revised textbooks were distributed to schools for the 2025–2026 academic year.

The third and final phase of the curriculum reform began in July 2025 and is now close to completion. This phase includes updating the curricula for grades 3, 6, 9, and 12 (Baccalaureate level). The new textbooks are scheduled to be distributed to schools at the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.

Subjects being updated

The subjects included in this phase of the curriculum update are:

Kurdish, Arabic, and English languages; Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics; Society and Life (Grade 3); Social Studies (Grade 6); Culture and Ethics (Grade 9); Sociology (Grade 12); Art and Music (Grades 3, 6, and 9); Geography, History, Physical Education, Philosophy, and Kurdish Literature.

In addition, the Jineology (Women's Science) textbook taught in Grade 12 was revised by the Jineology Academy in Rojava. The updated textbook was also approved by the Curriculum Institution alongside the other revised subjects.

Ready for printing

According to information provided to ANHA's agency by Abdulrahman Sli, a member of the Curriculum Institution, the curriculum revision process is nearly complete and the materials will be sent to print in the near future.

However, Sli did not provide further details regarding the exact timeline for printing and distributing the curricula of this final phase.

Autonomous Administration education system to continue for two more academic years

Following the collapse of the Ba'ath regime and the formation of Syria's interim government, an agreement was reached on January 29, 2026, between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Autonomous Administration, and the interim government. As part of this agreement, consultations are underway regarding the educational system that will be implemented across the country.

According to statements and information released after the meetings, discussions concerning the future education system are still ongoing.

Until a final agreement is reached, the current educational system will remain in place in schools operating under the Autonomous Administration. This arrangement has been set for two academic years, meaning that both the 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 academic years will continue under the Autonomous Administration's educational system.
