Condemnation of attack on aid convoy, call for disclosure of detainees’ fate

Today, Thursday, the “Civil Assembly in Jaramana” issued a statement condemning the attack on a humanitarian aid convoy that was en route to Sweida last Monday.

The statement explained that the convoy, carrying medical and food supplies, clothing, and baby formula, had been organized in coordination with the civil and local community in Jaramana and had obtained the necessary official approvals before heading to support families affected in Sweida.

It added that the convoy was attacked by unknown armed parties shortly before reaching the Bosra al-Sham crossing, resulting in the looting of its contents and the detention of all crew members. Security forces managed to rescue some of them, while the fate of five individuals remains unknown: Abed Abu Fakhr, Fidaa Azzam, Samir Barakat, Yamen al-Sahnawi, and Radwan al-Sahnawi.

The Civil Assembly described the incident as “a blatant violation of the most basic principles of human rights and international humanitarian law, and a direct attack on the right of affected civilians to receive humanitarian aid,” calling on official authorities to assume their responsibilities in disclosing the fate of the detainees and ensuring their safe return.

The Assembly also expressed its gratitude to the local and civil bodies that offered their cooperation in clarifying the circumstances of the incident and ensuring the safety of those detained, affirming its continued commitment to humanitarian work despite the challenges.
