British Foreign Office welcomes PKK's decision: Contributes to regional stability

The British Foreign Office issued a statement in response to a letter sent by the Foreign Relations Committee of the Kurdish People's Assembly regarding the decisions of the PKK's 12th Congress, which took place on May 12.

In its statement, the Foreign Office noted the strategic relationship between Britain and Turkey and emphasized that it is closely following recent developments.

The ministry said it was closely following developments following the PKK's announcement, adding: "The PKK's decision to cease armed action and disband is an important step towards peace and security for the people of Turkey and the wider region. The UK remains committed to supporting efforts that reduce conflict and promote stability."

In recent meetings with Turkish officials, British ministers have discussed several issues, including the PKK's decision to disband, the statement said.

Regarding the status of leader Abdullah Ocalan, the Foreign Ministry stated that his arrest was based on “a decision by the Turkish judiciary, and that individual judgments are assessed within the internal Turkish judicial system.”

Agid Kahrah Tash, from the Foreign Relations Committee of the Kurdish People's Assembly, told Euphrates News Agency that they sent an urgent letter to the British Foreign Office after the PKK conference: "In that letter, we asked what position Britain will take if the armed struggle moves from the stage of armed struggle to the stage of democratic, political and legal struggle. We also asked questions about the right to hope.".

He added that the British Foreign Office's response was not surprising, "but it is thought-provoking." "While the British government emphasizes that Turkey is a strategic ally in NATO and believes that the PKK's new orientation may contribute to regional peace, the status of leader Abdullah Ocalan was described as 'an internal matter for the Turkish judicial system'.

In reality, these statements point to the fact that Abdullah Ocalan's freedom requires a reassessment of the mechanisms of the Turkish judiciary and the operationalization of the 'right to hope' enshrined in international law."

He pointed out that creating an environment in which the leader can live freely is the key to the solution for Turkey and the people of the region, and said that the campaigns organized in Britain to demand the leader's freedom have wide popular support.

"The main task of the Kurdish people and their friends today is to fully embrace this path and activate the available political, social and legal mechanisms," he added.

He concluded by calling on the international community to contribute to the democratization process.
