Damascus Authority Interior Ministry appointments spark widespread controversy

New appointments made by the Damascus authorities' Ministry of Interior sparked a wave of controversy on social media, after Syrians noticed that the majority of those appointed to “leadership positions in the police and interior departments” come from similar backgrounds, which was described as “one color dominating the joints of power.”

One Syrian wrote a comment: “Kandahar welcomes you,” referring to the analogy of the Damascus authority to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, where the authority imposes a single color of governance and identity.

Another added that the appointments were reminiscent of the experience of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was accused of appointing those close to the Muslim Brotherhood to positions of power before he was ousted by the army led by President Abd al- Fattah al-Sisi.

According to observers, these appointments reveal a further political and administrative contraction of the Damascus authority and reinforce sectarian and regional centralization, similar to the Baathist regime, which has long been criticized internally and externally, exacerbating the crisis of trust between the authority and the components of Syrian society.
