Armed attack and kidnapping of volunteers targeted relief convoy heading to Sweida

A civilian convoy transporting relief supplies from the city of Jaramana to Sweida was attacked yesterday in the eastern countryside of Daraa, within areas controlled by the transitional government forces. This attack resulted in the kidnapping of seven volunteers and the seizure of vehicles loaded with food parcels.

According to local and media sources, an armed group intercepted the convoy near a checkpoint belonging to the transitional government forces in Syria and proceeded to kidnap the volunteers and their vehicles.

The sources indicated that three of the volunteers were released, while four remain detained: Abed Abu Fakhr, Fidaa Azzam, Yamen Mamdouh al-Sahnawi, and Radwan Zaid al-Sahnawi, all from Jaramana.

They added that negotiations are underway to release the detainees, amid allegations by transitional government officials that tribal militants were behind the incident.

It's worth noting that relief convoys heading to Sweida, which has been under siege for a month, have been subjected to repeated attacks in areas controlled by transitional government forces. The most notable incident occurred on August 8 when a Red Crescent convoy was targeted by gunfire near the village of Sahwat al-Qamh in the eastern Daraa countryside.
