Al-Hol Administration: Operation launched after crimes, unrest

Jihan Hanan, co-chair of al-Hol Camp, confirmed that security and military forces launched the fourth phase of the “Humanity and Security” operation inside the camp after a rise in crimes, riots, and assaults in recent months, particularly in the section housing foreign women (al-muhajirat section).

The Internal Security Forces, the Women’s Internal Security Forces, the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), with the support of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the International Coalition, launched the fourth phase of the “Humanity and Security” operation in al-Hol Camp on Friday through an official statement issued from the camp.

In this context, Jihan Hanan stressed that in recent months the camp has witnessed a significant increase in crimes, especially in the foreign (al-muhajirat) women’s section.

Al-Hol Camp hosts 1,884 families of foreign nationalities, totaling 6,352 individuals, including about 4,100 children under the age of 17 living with their mothers in the foreign women’s section.

Hanan explained that “these crimes were not limited to murder alone, but also included physical assaults, the burning of aid organization facilities, and the vandalism of public infrastructure.”

As a result of these practices and crimes, services provided in the camp have been limited to “life-saving services only,” according to Hanan, who also noted that humanitarian staff and aid workers had been repeatedly subjected to attacks and beatings inside the camp.

She pointed out that numerous and ongoing complaints had been filed by residents, humanitarian workers, and companies operating inside the camp regarding the escalation of riots, assaults, and acts of vandalism.

Hanan added that previous security operations in the camp had significantly contributed to dismantling a number of ISIS sleeper cells involved in sabotage and organizing activities for the group outside the camp, but that they remain insufficient to solve the dilemma of the families of ISIS mercenaries.

In conclusion, Jihan Hanan emphasized that these developments necessitated the launch of a new security operation to bring the situation under control inside the camp and curb the growing chaos.

Al-Hol Camp currently houses more than 26,500 people, including 6,352 individuals from families of ISIS foreign nationals, 4,933 Iraqis, 15,245 Syrians, and 9 of unknown nationality.
