After 30 years in Turkish Prisons, Kurdish activists return to Aleppo

The two activists, Ismail (51) and Ossi (53), arrived today in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood of Aleppo following their release from Turkish prisons.

Hundreds of residents from Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh received them with flowers, in recognition of the steadfast resistance they showed during all those years in Turkish prisons and their commitment to the cause they believe in, despite the harshest conditions.

Locals scattered rice over the two activists and set off fireworks amid mothers’ ululations, drumbeats, and joyful celebrations of their freedom.

Mohammed Ismail was arrested by the Turkish army in 1994 during his activism in the city of Kars in northern Kurdistan and was later transferred to serve his sentence in the notorious Bolu Prison.

As for Lamia Ossi, she was arrested by the Turkish army in 1994 in Siirt, also in northern Kurdistan, and was transferred among several prisons, including Siirt, Amed, Sivas, and Şakran.

During the welcoming gathering, both activists addressed the crowd, conveying the greetings of the detainees in Turkish prisons to the people of the area. They emphasized the importance of preserving the achievements of the July 19 Revolution, made possible through the sacrifices of martyrs and the philosophy and ideas of Leader Abdullah Ocalan.
