9 attacks hit Southern Kurdistan in week

In less than a week, the pace of attacks on Southern Kurdistan has intensified, with drones and rockets used in several operations targeting critical infrastructure and cities in the region. This reflects a rising trend in security incidents.

On July 1, the official Iraqi news agency reported that two Katyusha rockets struck the Kirkuk Air Base in Southern Kurdistan, one landing between the runways, while the other hit a house in the Al-Orouba neighborhood of Kirkuk province. No casualties or material damages were reported.

On July 2, two drones were downed on the same day, one in the Tasluja area and the other outside the headquarters of Unit 70. Officials in Southern Kurdistan confirmed that no injuries or casualties occurred.

That same night, the Baiji oil refinery was targeted in an attack involving more than ten explosive drones, though no major damage or significant losses were reported.

On July 3, a drone crashed on Airport Street south of Kirkuk near the Badr neighborhood. Meanwhile, the Counter-Terrorism Forces in the Federal Region of Southern Kurdistan announced the downing of an explosive drone near Erbil International Airport.

Erbil Airport authorities confirmed that flight operations continued as usual, with the attack causing only a slight delay in the landing of one aircraft and no damage to the airport.

These repeated incidents highlight a significant escalation in drone and rocket attacks, raising concerns over the continued deterioration of the security situation and the growing inability of institutions to counter these threats, which are increasingly targeting vital facilities and strategic cities.
