220,000 Syrian refugees return from Jordan since Baath regime fall

Around 220,000 registered Syrian refugees have returned voluntarily from Jordan to Syria since the fall of the Baath regime, including 45,000 during 2026, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The UNHCR said around 220,000 registered Syrian refugees voluntarily returned to Syria from Jordan between December 8, 2024, and August 24, 2026.

Youssef Taha, a UNHCR spokesperson in Jordan, said around 45,000 Syrian refugees have returned since the beginning of 2026, with the pace of returns increasing following the end of the school year and improved weather conditions.

According to the data, 59% of the refugees returned as entire families, while partial family returns accounted for around 41%. The average weekly return rate stands at approximately 1,300 refugees, with daily peaks ranging between 200 and 344 returnees.

Jordan currently hosts around 375,000 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with the UNHCR, approximately 92% of whom are Syrians, totaling around 350,000 people. About 79% of Syrian refugees live outside camps in cities and host communities.
