Under the slogan "Let’s Democratize Politics, Let’s Build a Democratic Society," the conference was organized by the Free Women’s Movement and kicked off today, Wednesday, May 28, in Amed, North Kurdistan. The event will continue over two days and includes the participation of Kurdish women parliamentarians from Kurdistan, the Middle East, and Europe.

Koljan Kaşmaz Saygit, the co-chair of the Democratic Unity Initiative, delivered the opening speech. She emphasized that the Kurdish people, especially Kurdish women, have endured difficult circumstances. She pointed out that nation-states followed three main policies: they divided the Kurdish people into four parts, destroyed them, implemented assimilation policies, and prevented Kurds from uniting.

She noted that efforts are currently underway to achieve Kurdish unity, saying: "We must support the statements and decisions that come out of this conference. By supporting them, we ensure our unity. A third world war is looming." She emphasized that amidst the regional crises, the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadî (Woman, Life, Freedom) is the best solution for Kurdistan and the Middle East.

She also explained that as Kurdish women raise their voices around the world with the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadî, they will share their experiences and reveal new ideas. She continued: “Under these circumstances, serious efforts are being made today in the four parts of Kurdistan and in the diaspora,” stressing that women are actively participating in politics and their resistance continues.

Referring to the peace and democratic society appeal made by Leader Abdullah Ocalan on February 27, she said: “Mr. Ocalan made a global impact when he called for peace,” adding, “We, as women, must intensify our efforts to ensure a democratic society. Our responsibility is great. We must support the decisions of this conference and dismantle the mindset and policies of the patriarchal state. Unity belongs to the Kurdish people and Kurdish women, and it will undoubtedly be achieved.”

Evin Swed, the co-chair of the Executive Council of the Democratic Autonomous Administration, also joined the conference via Zoom.

Following the opening speech, a documentary was screened showcasing the struggle of Kurdish women. The conference proceedings are still ongoing.
