Attorney: AANES has right to try ISIS in accordance with international law

On the 10th of this June, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced that it had decided to try the foreign ISIS mercenaries in accordance with international and domestic laws on terrorism, and in a way that preserves the rights of the plaintiffs, victims and their family members.

Concerning the legal aspect of these trials, lawyer Gabriel Mustafa told ANHA agency: "The Autonomous Administration has the right to prosecute ISIS mercenaries from the point of view of international law," and added, "There is no text that prevents this (trials)."

Mustafa stressed: "There is no legal or political impediment preventing the Autonomous Administration from conducting trials for foreign ISIS mecenaries, especially the international community has become incapable of trying them."

"Therefore, when the Autonomous Administration adheres to international standards and laws in trials, this trial will become real and objective, so I expected that these trials will get international, political and judicial support."

Mustafa added: " the Administration can try them (ISIS mercenaries) based on the spatial jurisdiction of the crime, and the fact that ISIS committed crimes in NE Syria, so it can try them."

The lawyer stipulated that the trials be fair, transparent and balanced with international standards, charters and laws.

On Sunday, the co-chair of the Media Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Jiwan Malla Ibrahim referred that the media can attend and cover the trial sessions which reflects  AANES's efforts to show the facts as they are.

According to Jiwan Malla Ibrahim, ISIS mercenaries will be tried according to the laws of NE Syria, in addition to the terrorism law and related laws in international forums and the international community in general.
