 Aleppo - Mohammed Abdo

The earthquakes that struck the region since February 6 caused hundreds of houses to crack, and a number of others collapsed. However, the degrees of danger in the war ruins adjacent to the homes of the people;  became elevated.

The Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo were destroyed in earlier times.  As a result of the attacks of the Turkish occupation mercenaries on them, especially in 2016, which led to the collapse and damage of many buildings;  by explosives and missiles.

The most affected areas were in the two neighborhoods;  Intelligence Street located in the western part of Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, and the end of the Ashrafieh line.

Improper foundations

The citizen, Luqman Nabo, a resident of Al-Mukhabarat Street, which was damaged during the war and the rate of destruction increased after the earthquake, said: " that they are afraid of placing their houses next to the ruins of the destroyed houses because their foundations are not sound and have become very dangerous after the earthquake.

Nabo noted that he decided to vacate his house in anticipation of any damage if aftershocks occurred, especially after the engineering committees of the People's Municipality discovered his house and informed him that it needs restoration.  He is now staying in his sister's house located in Sheikh Maqsoud, which is considered less dangerous than his house on Mukhabarat Street among the crumbling ruins.

 obstruction of aid

The Damascus government, through its personnel and checkpoints deployed around the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, has been impeding the passage of humanitarian aid, along with fuel, medicine, infant formula and flour, to the two neighborhoods for nearly 6 months.

According to our correspondents, the aid that has entered the two neighborhoods since the last earthquake that struck the area was as follows:  21 trucks carrying shelter supplies, which are part of the international aid provided to Syria, and a Kurdish Red Crescent truck containing 6 tents and 10 fuel tanks provided by the Autonomous Administration.

In total, the aid that passed did not include foodstuffs, in addition to being insufficient compared to the number of internally displaced persons, according to the reports of the General Council of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, which numbered 60,000 people.

The municipality cannot intervene without mechanisms

In turn, the head of the technical office of the People's Municipality in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, Eng. Adnan Jaro, said, "The war that raged on the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods contributed greatly to the damage to many of the foundations of the buildings, and the earthquake increased their danger."

He stressed that they do not have the required mechanisms to deal with these cases to protect the people.

As for the required mechanisms, he identified them as follows:  (Tracked excavators, buckets, huge tracked loaders, tipper dump trucks), and pointed to the existence of a single JCB and a small bucket, which are machines that cannot intervene to remove five-story buildings.

People should support the municipality to overcome this situation

Adnan noted that there is no total toll from the ruins of the destroyed buildings.  As a result of the war, and the building damage toll issued by the municipality is the earthquake-damaged buildings only, estimated at 400 buildings that need restoration and 12 buildings that must be removed;  In order to preserve public safety.

At the end of his speech, he appealed to all the people to cooperate with them and with the municipality workers to remove as much crumbling walls as possible, and to report the cracked buildings to work on placing them within the plan for future works and addressing their situation according to capabilities.

It is noteworthy that the elements of the Damascus government deployed around the checkpoints surrounding the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods have imposed a siege for nearly 6 months, obstructing the passage of fuel, as well as flour, infant formula and the necessary machinery, despite the catastrophe of the earthquake that befell the region.
