KOBANI

On January 26, 2015, the People's and Women's Protection Units announced the liberation of the city of Kobani from ISIS, which is supported by the Turkish occupation state. This constituted a turning point in the course of the war in Syria and Iraq against "terrorism", especially after the two countries lost vast areas of their lands in favor of ISIS.

No less than 70% of the city's area of 7 km2 was destroyed, 30% of which was completely destroyed in the north and center of the city, while 40% was partially destroyed; As a result of the battles that lasted for months.

Why did ISIS target Kobani and what is the role of regional countries in the attack?

ISIS siege on Kobani canton came for more than a year; The Autonomous Administration announced 3 main cantons in Rojava (Qamishlo, Kobani, and Afrin) in early 2013.

ISIS occupied a third of Iraq, including its second largest city, Mosul, within two days, with tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers fleeing during its advance.

On the Syrian side, ISIS was able, through its policy of intimidation, to occupy the entire region of Raqqa and other areas in Aleppo, Hasakah, and Deir al-Zor, with the almost complete collapse of the Damascus government forces.

The Turkish occupation state was the main bridge for tens of thousands of foreign mercenaries from different countries around the world to cross and join ISIS.

According to official documents, 40,000 ISIS militants entered Syria and Iraq through Turkish territory, and the cities of Adana, Antep, Raha (Urfa) and Istanbul turned into hotspots for ISIS activity under Turkish sponsorship.

ISIS seized heavy and medium weapons, logistical materials, money and gold from the Syrian and Iraqi governments; As a result of the collapse of the government system in a number of cities, it benefited from this in recruiting thousands of young men; in favor of its plans.

Before heading to Kobani, the number of ISIS mercenaries reached 300,000 in Syria and Iraq. The Turkish occupation state was drawing a plan for ISIS's occupation of Kobani and hitting one of the 3 provinces announced in northern Syria in an indirect Turkish war inside Syrian territory.

The city of Kobane has great symbolism. It is the first city in Rojava, which received the leader Abdullah Ocalan in the summer of 1979, where the leader spent 3 months in one of the houses of the village of Alblour, which was bombed by the Turkish occupation state two years ago, in the context of destroying the sanctities of the Kurdish people, in addition to that sparking the July 19 revolution, "revolution Rojava "was launched in Kobani, when hundreds of the people of the canton took control of the buildings and institutions of the Damascus government in 2012.

From the battle of Kobani.. An Arab-Kurdish alliance led to the formation of SDF

ISIS dragged the war to Kobani, and thousands of mercenaries began a bloody battle, the most violent in the Syrian war, by attacking the canton from 3 directions, until they occupied more than 200 villages, and arrived in the city on October 5, 2014.

Hundreds of fighters of the People's and Women's Protection Units, alongside Arab forces, fought for the first time in a joint battle against ISIS in the neighborhoods of Kobani, with the active participation of the PKK fighters and international fighters.

The general mobilization launched by the leader Abdullah Ocalan to protect Kobani and prevent its fall played a pivotal role in fueling the fire of resistance against ISIS and its allies, so that the Kurdish and international fighters were able to bury the dreams of the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries under the rubble of the city.

The Kurds and nations sympathetic to the Kurdish cause turned dozens of cities in Turkey and around the world into flaming arenas of daily protests against Turkish support for ISIS and the silence of international powers regarding Turkey's plans under the guise of ISIS.

The battle of Kobani, in which more than 6,000 mercenaries were killed over a period of about 5 months, inside the city adjacent to the border with Bakur (Northern Kurdistan), was a turning point in breaking the thorn of ISIS despite the Turkish support to control the city.

Months after the battle, the formation of the Syrian Democratic Forces was announced on October 10, 2015.

The Syrian cities, towns, and villages were liberated, one after the other, and ISIS collapsed after losing cities, such as Manbij, Tabqa, and Raqqa, until it was besieged in a geographical area of no more than 1,000 square meters in Al-Baghouz, as 3 thousand ISIS mercenaries surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces, except for thousands of their families, after fierce battles for months.

As the year 2019 witnessed the most important events in the framework of eliminating global terrorism; represented by ISIS, where the Syrian Democratic Forces fought battles to eliminate ISIS in its last stronghold in the town of Al-Baghouz, after about 63 months of continuous battles in NE Syria.

For 10 years, the battle has not stopped in Kobani

Tens of tons of explosives fell on the city of Kobani and its countryside during 10 years of continuous war, and hundreds of thousands are still living in this canton under the danger posed by the Turkish occupation state.

The attacks of "Jabhat al-Nusra" and ISIS against Kobani between 2012 and 2015 were nothing but a Turkish plan to occupy Kobani, which is symbolic to the Kurdish people, as it turned into a global symbol of resistance after the defeat of ISIS in the city.

The Turkish occupation state is still experiencing the shock of the defeat of ISIS in Kobani. It even opened the border crossing for ISIS to commit the massacre of June 25, 2015, in which 250 citizens were killed, most of them women and children, not only that, during the past 3 years, the Turkish occupation state has used warplanes and drones 22 times in bombing inside the city and its countryside, leaving 31 civilians dead or wounded, in addition to the almost daily exposure of dozens of villages in the western and eastern countryside to the continuous Turkish ground bombardment.

All of this comes within the framework of seeking to displace tens of thousands of people from Kobani canton and empty the region in order to occupy it, and this is what the Turkish occupation state failed to do, in addition to the economic war by cutting off the water of the Euphrates River, which is the lifeblood of the canton, and the private war by promoting narcotics and other tools to tarnish the image of Kobani.

Kobani canton lives in a state of stability despite the threats and sporadic attacks of the Turkish occupation state, where the people are working to activate the experience of the Autonomous Administration and the democratic project at high levels while preparing for the people's revolutionary war against any ground attack that Turkey and its allies might carry out

At a time when the international forces are turning their backs on the brutality of the Turkish occupation state and what it practices against this boycott, thousands are still taking to the streets and raising the flag of resistance in the face of the Turkish occupation, and expressing their support and confidence in their sons and daughters in the Syrian Democratic Forces and their belief in the comprehensive revolutionary war against the occupation.
