Talks about negotiations and reconciliation between the two sides increased after the recent meetings in Sochi and Tehran, which brought together the leaders of the Astana countries (Russia - Iran - Turkey).

Earlier, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Çavuşoğlu, said: "The regime and the opposition must reach an agreement on a constitution and a road map that includes an electoral process in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution."

A few days earlier, a newspaper close to the Turkish authorities said that "Turkey's relations with Syria are gaining a new dimension, as the Turkish side has completed preparations to open two new gates towards Syria to transport goods and humanitarian aid, namely the Bab-Abu Zandin Gate and the Idlib-Saraqib Gate."

 The language of interests

The Syrian writer and journalist, Thaer Al-Zazo’, spoke about this, “The basic principle in politics is that there is no permanent enemy or permanent friend. Politics is the language of interests in the first place, and if the two sides have an interest in normalizing relations between them, we will certainly witness more rapprochement, and it seems that both parties are the same regime.”  The Syrian or the Turkish have a desire to turn the page of the estrangement, and perhaps the economic factor is the main driver in this (reconciliation), although over the past years, the security coordination between them has not stopped.”

He added, "The propaganda aspect cannot be excluded for political reasons, of course. The Turkish regime is on the verge of elections and desperately needs to win them,  playing the (immigrant) card is no longer convincing for the Turkish street, especially after the economic crisis, in which the Turkish opposition says the main reason is the presence of refugees.  There is a Turkish plan to return those Syrian refugees to their country. Of course, such a plan has been achieved if implemented to remove one of the files that oppose the Turkish regime, and the rapprochement or normalization of relations with the Syrian regime will be a message to the Syrian opposition in Turkey, that everything  It's over, and that Turkey shook its hands from the Syrian file."

What is the fate of the occupied territories?

The Syrians are wondering about the fate of the Syrian areas occupied by Turkey if an agreement is reached between the Damascus government and the occupation, and an agreement is signed between the two parties?

Previously, the Damascus government, through the Adana Agreement, ceded Syria's right to restore the Iskenderun Brigade, as the Syrians feared the repetition of the scenario in the occupied areas (the countryside of Idlib and Hama - Jarablus - Al-Bab - Al-Rai - Afrin - Serêkaniyê - Girê Spî."

Regarding this, Al-Zazo says: “I do not think that the Syrian regime has the ability to force Turkey to withdraw from the areas it controls, but we may witness, in the event of normalization of relations between the two regimes, coordination and perhaps cooperation in managing those areas, in a way, there is a solution that It is now possible to see what it looks like, because not only Damascus and Ankara are concerned, but there are international players, Washington and Moscow, and even Tehran.”

The fighting in Afrin... feel the pulse

In conjunction with the talk about the planned reconciliation between the Damascus government and the Turkish occupation, fighting broke out between mercenary groups in northern Syria, especially in Afrin.

As a result of this fighting, the mercenaries of "Tahrir al-Sham" (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) took control of Afrin in a scenario that many observers considered to be orchestrated by the Turkish occupation intelligence.

Experts and observers set several goals for this fighting, including paving the way for the planned reconciliation between Damascus and the Turkish occupation.

Regarding this, Al-Zazo says: “What happened recently in the fighting in the north of Syria is akin to feeling the pulse, for the possibility of transforming these areas into a semi-independent entity under one authority, it does not matter if it is Tahrir al-Sham or something else, but it seems that the result of the fighting did not reach  In the interest of any of the combatants, neither the Turkish-affiliated factions nor HTS can resolve the matter without Ankara’s direct intervention. Therefore, it was decided that the matter would remain as it is, and that HTS would partially withdraw to its areas, and it is not excluded that we will witness a new fighting at a later time.  to impose control.

He added, "All of this is taking place under direct directives from Ankara and other players, including the Syrian regime. The whole issue is to maintain one faction capable of managing these areas, and later the appropriate form of managing and benefiting from them may be decided, in the event of reconciliation between the two regimes."

Despite talking about the withdrawal of "Tahrir al-Sham" mercenaries from Afrin, many reports and media outlets, including the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed that the "Tahrir al-Sham" mercenaries withdrew from there in a fictitious manner and are still present in Afrin and control the situation there.

Al-Zazou concluded his speech, "I do not think that the Damascus regime has the ability to impose great conditions, as it is in dire need of breaking its international isolation first, and for this reason it is expected to agree to the continuation of Turkish control over those areas, and it will be present only symbolically."
