10 years have passed since the July 19th Revolution, and it is now facing new threats and attacks from the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries. In addition to these attacks, the policies of distorting the revolution continue.

Professor Victor De Currea-Lugo is one of those misleading about the Rojava revolution who visited the region in 2019 to learn about the Rojava revolution firsthand.

The writer, professor, and expert on Middle Eastern affairs spoke; Professor Victor de Currea Logo to ANHA’s agency on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Rojava revolution.

Victor De Currea-Lugo, who visited Rojava in 2019, described the July 19 revolution as a great victory and said: “First of all, I learned about the Kurdish struggle through books and academic discussions. I first met the Kurds in 2013 in Amed and then visited Başûr (Southern Kurdistan) and I was in Rojava in 2019. I visited Amuda, Kobani and other cities in Rojava. It was very important for me to bear witness to the struggle, especially the struggle of women. The building of society for a new system after the war in Kobani is really a great victory. All of these things must be respected.

Visiting Qamishlo, Amuda and Kobani was a wonderful experience for me because you are showing the world how it is possible to build a real popular force and this is a great victory. i.e. ironically; Let's say you are not a good example to humanity."

Currea-Lugo continued, "What I saw in Rojava is that the Kurdish people and all the other peoples in the region live together. I also visited regions like Western Sahara, I was in Palestine, I visited Burma in Myanmar, and in my opinion the role that women play is a prominent role and a good example."

Currea de Lugo mentioned the Rojava revolution as an example to the whole world and said: "The greatest struggle is not only an experiment but a victory."

Currea-Lugo referred to the Kurdish people's building of a regional power in Turkey and Iraq, but most importantly, the Kurds in Rojava became a model for other societies.

Currea-Lugo explained that he was misled about the Rojava revolution and said: “For me, one of the biggest dangers in Latin America is the lack of information, its limitations and misinformation about the Kurdish people. Some experts are even trying to discredit Rojava regarding the Kurdish people. This is really important to me. Because the lack of information or the spread of misinformation prevent it from being supported or recognized.”

Currea-Lugo commented on the attacks and threats faced by the July 19 Revolution, saying: "The Turkish and Syrian armies continue to follow the same logic to eliminate the Kurdish people and the Kurdish struggle and discrimination."

Currea-Lugo mentioned that the Turkish state's biggest problem is that it seeks to build a homogeneous nation and noted that "the Kurdish people in Rojava and other regions seek to contain and annex minorities."

Currea-Lugo emphasized that the Turkish state seeks to build a homogeneous nation of Turkish origin based on Ataturk's theories and said, "This means the suppression and elimination of minorities. That is why the Turkish people's confrontation with the Turkish government and the ability to struggle for a multinational and multicultural homeland in which all people can live in the same rights and freedoms.

Currea-Lugo pointed out that armed struggle is not an option but a duty imposed on the Kurdish people to defend themselves and said, “Building stronger regional capabilities and sharing democratic principles on the one hand, and preparations for the necessity of using weapons on the other are all on the table. According to my understanding, this combination is the way to continue the Kurdish struggle."

Lugo commented on the crimes of the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries in North and East Syria, pointing out that these crimes occurred due to the international community's lack of respect for the rule of law, international conventions and rules.

Currea-Lugo described this situation as "the scenario of the international community, which is said to be only interests and not friendly."

Currea-Lugo continued, "They do not seek war all over the Middle East on the basis of international rules or law. They focus on their interests. When analyzing the struggle of the Kurdish people, they show this moral duality.

I had visited a camp for displaced people in Rojava. I met people from Holland and Germany. They were Dutch and German citizens who were born there and have lived there for a long time. They did not accept their return to their countries, citing security as a reason. This does not mean only a lack of respect for international law, but also that this person is a citizen and that states have responsibilities towards them.”

Professor Currea-Lugo stressed that the solution is international law, but that it is never respected. He continued, "The pressures exerted on the Kurdish people and the intent to eradicate society can be clearly seen. That is why one can talk about genocide attempts. When talking about international humanitarian law, and when the issue is related to respect for civilians and some facts, for example, the crossing of Turkish warplanes into the area and the bombing of the refugee camp in Makhmour is a public attack on civilians, and the pressure of the Turkish authorities on journalists and activists in Turkey is a violation of human rights, meaning that the solution already exists on paper. "But it is like this in every human struggle in the world. The problem is that paper is not enough and a piece of paper does not save a life."
