SOHR: Thousands of detainees still in prisons after Assad's pardon

SOHR said that thousands of detainees are still languishing in the prisons of the Damascus government, after the so-called Presidential Pardon amid absence of official lists of those released and specific places to hand them over.

SOHR monitored a state of discontent is growing over the pardon in Damascus-controlled areas among Damascus loyalists including militiamen of the National Defence Forces (NDF) and other Damascus-backed militias.

According to SOHR statistics, 969,854 people, including 155,002 women, have been arrested by Damascus security services since the beginning of the “Syrian Crisis ” in March 2011. It is worth noting that 152,713 people, including 41,312 women, remains in Damascus prisons.

The Syrian Observatory warns of Damascus’s attempts to polish its image in front of the international community and to dodge crimes and blatant violations committed in prisons since 2011 through the issuance of this pardon, especially since this pardon coincides with the successive international reports on the issue of violations and torture committed against detainees in Damascus prisons and pressure imposed by human rights organisations.
