A human rights researcher calls on CPT to visit Imrali

Turkish authorities began imposing a series of arbitrary measures against leader, Abdullah Ocalan, which Muhammad Mukhtar, considers it a violation of the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, which provides a large number of basic rights for prisoners, but it was not available to leader Ocalan.

leader Ocalan's lawyers confirmed that they had not been able to obtain information about the leader and other prisoners situation for 8 months, and nothing about their health conditions, detention and legal conditions, as well as measures related to Corona virus.

The lawyers indicated that the Penal Court in Bursa, that rejected the lawyers' request to meet with him, clarified that it imposed a sentence on the leader Ocalan, as of October 12, that prevented him to meet the lawyers for 6 months.

In this context, Muhammed Mukhtar said: "The Turkish government has prevented his communication with lawyers for more than 8 months now, and this clearly violates the part on prisoners' right to contact with the outside world stipulated in the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners".

Mukhtar pointed out that it is no longer limited to not allowing Ocalan to communicate with his lawyer, and added: "There is also confirmed information that he was mistreated inside prison, which is a case of psychological torture that violates many international conventions that Turkey has signed, such as the European convention on human rights, article 3 of which prohibits any form of torture.

Mukhtar called on European Committee against Torture (CPT) to visit Imrali, to ensure that leader Ocalan is not subjected to torture, in addition to the need to pressure the Turkish government to allow him to communicate with his lawyer in light for applying the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, which are stipulated by the United Nations.

At the conclusion of his speech, Mukhtar stressed that the real crisis in Turkey lies in the justice system that imprisons, arrests and tortures everyone who is different because it sees it as a threat to the current government, indicating that who criticizes Erdogan the Turkish President will be imprisoned, tortured and mistreated.
