Pederson to Damascus this week; Constitutional Commission leads the visit

Geir Pedersen, the UN Secretary-General's special envoy, is arriving in Damascus this week, on a visit led by the Constitutional Committee.

On Sunday, Al-Watan Newspaper, affiliated with the Damascus Government, quoted diplomatic sources in Damascus confirming that Pedersen, who will arrive on Tuesday, will meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Damascus Government, Faisal Miqdad.

Pedersen is supposed to discuss in Damascus the possibility of holding a seventh round of meetings of the committee to discuss amending the constitution in Geneva.

It was expected that this tour would be held before the end of this year, but a diplomatic source suggested to the newspaper that it would be postponed until after Christmas and New Year, and perhaps to the beginning of next February.

The sources revealed that Pedersen, after the end of his visit, will move to Brussels to participate in the meeting of the "Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS " scheduled for the second of next month, which will be held at the level of senior officials.

The previous rounds of the so-called Constitutional Committee did not lead to any progress, given that participation in its meetings was restricted between those seeking power, representatives of the Damascus Government and loyal to Turkey, amid the exclusion of democratic forces in Syria.
