April 4th: Birth of people – 2

After 1970, leader Abdullah Ocalan took the struggle further steps forward and began to lay the foundations for a revolutionary tool that culminated in the establishment of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in 1978 away from nationalism.

My goal is to create a struggling organization and a fighting people

In the first part of this dossier, the first stage of Ocalan's life was dealt with, and in this part the second and third stages will be dealt with as he describes it in his volume "Defense of People."

The second stage of leader's life

Regarding the second stage of his life, leader Abdullah Ocalan says in the volume of Defense of People, "This time, there is a break from bourgeois society and its state to begin the experiment of forming an independent ideological group, aiming to establish its own contemporary social and political system."

The leader divides this stage into two parts:

The first extends between the years 1972 - 1984, and it can also be called the campaign to awaken the deprived Kurdish people towards the era, or the first rebellion, or the first shot aimed at blind fate, or considering it as a cry of dignity and honor, and it is called the first campaign to convert to PKK.

The second covers the period from August 15, 1984 to February 15, 1999. This period, which extends over a period of 15 years, is an amazing period, over which the armed struggle has dominated as a second campaign towards the conversion to PKK.

In the volume "The Kurdish Question and the Solution of the Democratic Nation", leader Abdullah Ocalan talks about the first part of his second personal and organizational life in more detail, and says, "In early 1973, I started to prepare and establish a group based on the thesis of "Kurdistan is colonized," but we did not follow a nationalist approach... I used to practice propaganda and verbal incitement within the group as if I was divulging a secret, without relying on any written document. This situation continued until the beginning of 1975….

In the winter of 1975, I embarked on formal verbal propaganda according to my knowledge and understanding. I used to do theoretical activity and propaganda together. I showed the courage and responsibility needed to form a gelatinous group at the meeting we held on the banks of the "Çubuk Dam" in Newroz of 1973. This was following the protest that we organized to denounce the killing of Maher Jayan and his comrades in the village of "Qazel Dorra" on the 30th of March in 1972, and also after the detention experience that I went through in "Mamak Military Prison" for a period of seven months (April - October 1972). For me, the Kurdish truth will become related to the outcomes that will result from the practice of that group….

The first draft we issued was in 1975, when I was in a house with Mohammed Khairy Dormouche, speaking while standing as if I was delivering a speech, while he was writing my words with tacit approval. That sermon was an evaluation like a lengthy manuscript about the reality of Kurdistan.... In fact, our group possessed the most regular and disciplined ideological awareness... We were closer to an ideological group with an unwavering faith….

The years 1974 and 1975 had the experience of the "Democratic Association for Higher Education in Ankara ADYŐD" at the operational level, which I took care of its presidency as a sensitive task. It was the first serious practical experience of my theoretical ideas. The result was embodied in 1976 with the radical and strategic break with the Turkish left, with a group of our comrades of Turkish origin (Hakki Qarar, Kemal Bir, Doran Kalkan)….

I entered the year 1977 while I was traveling around Kurdistan for the purpose of propaganda. In March, I announced my theses publicly for the first time at a meeting that was attended by a large crowd. It was held inside a large hall in the "Chamber of Architects" building in Ankara. Immediately after that, I started wandering in Kurdistan… I remember as if I had completed a tour in a real war field when I completed my tour in Kurdistan. I went to the cities of: Agri, Dogobayazid, Kars, Dejur, Dersim, Bingol, Alazg, Diyarbakir, Mardin, Urfa and Gaziantep, in addition to the Ankara line….

In 1978, we moved to the writing stage with Serkhboun newspaper, where I published in its first issue my article that I wrote in the summer of 1978 under the title "The Kurdistan Revolution Way," known as "Manifesto."

Only a few days passed in Ankara, when we received from Gaziantep the news of the martyrdom of "Hakki Qarar." I can say that I had a meltdown after this news. It was certain that we were dealt a heavy blow, but the important thing was to respond to his memory correctly... The pledge that I made embodied in fulfillment of his memory in directing the group towards partisan transformation. So I wrote down by myself the party’s draft program document in the fall of the same year….

As for the other important cornerstone on the path from which there is no return, it was embodied in our holding a meeting in the village of Fis, affiliated with Diyarbakir, based on the party program prepared in remembrance of Hakki Qarar. Where twenty-two people attended, and it served as the founding conference, and lasted for two days between 27 and 28 November 1978. In fact, the launch of the name PKK and self-declaration was the end of a phase of this context. We basically implemented what we should have done, whether according to global and Turkish conditions, or within the group's field practice. The revolutionary style is important here... The thing that should have been realized in the light of the objective circumstances at the time is the achievement of a breakthrough in the name of the "working" class in the bowels of the triad of city, class and the nation-state….

Starting in 1979, I sought to take the necessary measures in two directions. On the one hand, preparations were made for a long-term mountain struggle. On the other hand, I was looking forward to opening another reserve vent for the movement by going abroad. If it succeeded in doing so, the permanence of the movement would have become a reality….

When we arrived in the middle of 1979, I told Adham Akjan, from the city of Suruj, to prepare to cross the border. In Urfa, I went through a waiting period that lasted for forty days, during which I lived a special situation that was very similar to that of Ibrahim al-Khalil. I have broken many idols of civilization and modernity…. It was a really exciting meeting when I was in the city of Nimrud, at a time when Nimruds were ready and angry. I was walking in the footsteps of Ibrahim. What were going on in "Suruj" were similar situations that are almost lived in every inception after the rebellion….

After a few days, Adham informed me that the conditions are ready to go out ... And just like Ibrahim, I found myself among the Palestinians after a march that lasted a month or two. My days there started without knowing language or having an interpreter. They were days when there was nothing to cling to for the resistance, except for the importance of the hoped-for goal….

Therefore, only those who have undergone such experiences will be aware of the great importance of organization and of relations aimed at creating a new community to the degree they deserve. What I experienced in PKK was the truth whose significance I hardly realized.... The first year passed by being busy covering our logistical needs and reuniting our group….

Before the September 12th coup d'état, and specifically in July 1980, we sent the first group to return to the homeland, led by Kamal Bir and Masoum Kourkumaz. The influx of groups would have continued later, and accordingly, according to my opinion, the decisive year 1982 should have been the year of the completion of a new campaign (especially because of torture and hunger strikes to death in Diyarbakir prison). Thus we moved the center of the field campaign to the homeland, to the Loulan region, hoping to start it from there ... On August 15, 1984, and the August 15th campaign began.

My goal in the period 1970-1980 was to create the organization and the vanguard party. And it succeeded. My goal after 1980 was to create a fighting organization and a fighting people, no matter how long this would have required….

In the volume "The Kurdish Question and the Solution of the Democratic Nation", leader Abdullah Ocalan talks about the second part of his second personal and organizational life, which begins with the Leap of August 15th until February 15, 1999, in more detail, and says, "When the unexpected August 15 campaign was launched, the Gladio network in Turkey had purged the last remaining vestiges of the Turkish revolutionaries with the September 12th military coup in 1980. The August 15 campaign was not taken into account. And when it did, I thought at first that it was a simple left-wing adventure, and that the classic army, police and intelligence forces were able to overcome it immediately. However, the inability to finalize the matter in the first year led to the transfer of the matter to NATO, which approved in 1985 to intervene based on Article 5th of its founding law….

For the first time, in March of 1987, I began drafting analyzes on women ... The issue of women has gradually taken on a serious character. With each training session, I took one step further to delve deeper into the analyzes in this regard. The increase in the number of young women in our ranks required us to find fundamental answers to the issue of women's freedom….

In the period from 1987 until my departure from Syria on the ninth of October 1998, I myself prepared uninterrupted and painstaking campaigns, and launched them with astonishing perseverance... We succeeded in enabling the process and in maximizing the strength in our struggle ... and by the time we arrived at the end of 1998, it was no longer possible to liquidate our historic campaign in the People's Revolutionary War….

Concerning his exit from Syria on October 9, 1998, the leader says in the volume of the Kurdish Question and the Solution of the Democratic Nation, "There were two ways in front of me during the exit from Syria; the first was the mountain road, and the second was the European road. Choosing the mountain path meant escalating the war, while favoring Europe meant searching for an opportunity for a diplomatic and political solution."

On October 9, leader Abdullah Ocalan says in the volume "The March of Rome" that "there is another strange thing that you should know since it is of great importance to the Americans. October 9 is the day of Che Guevara's martyrdom. Choosing this day was remarkable. Most probably they chose this to bring me together with that great revolutionary, so they thought it was in their interest to get rid of me on a day like this…."

The leader continues his speech in the "The Kurdish Question and the Solution of the Democratic Nation" volume about his departure from Syria and his tour in Europe and the refusal of its countries to grant him political asylum, saying, "Syrian officials caught their breath after the plane landed me in Athens on the ninth of October ... We changed our destination towards Moscow on a private Greek plane..I stayed about thirty-three days in what was said to be secret ... My preference for Moscow came from my belief that "whatever it is," they lived a socialist experience that lasted a whole seven decades. So, they will accept me with ease.... And despite the collapse of their regime, but I did not expect them to be so demoralized. We were face to face in front of the rubble of bureaucratic capitalism that had cursed so much liberal capitalism. So we got disappointed with the attitude of friends in Moscow….

By coincidence, our third course was built on benefiting from our relations in Rome, so we started the Rome adventure, which would have lasted for sixty-six days in a hospital in Rome as part of the show scenario prepared by Italian intelligence.... My second trip to Russia was by mistake ... After some kind of deception, they took me on the cargo plane to land in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan. We waited for a week in a room we had never left. Then we turned back to Moscow. And again, we turned towards Athens after two days full of adventures and freezing cold and snow inside Moscow….

I was allegedly going to South Africa.... This was preceded by a trip to Minsk. I would have entered the Netherlands territories through Minsk before going to Nairobi. So, on a private jet again, I waited for over two hours in the bosom of the severe cold in Minsk, but the waiting plane did not come ... and in the hell of Nairobi, three paths were put forward in front of me: The first was a death decorated with a clashing scene, under the pretext of not obeying orders for a long time, the second was my compliance with the orders of the CIA without controversy and my surrender to it, and the third was handing me over to the Turkish Special War Units, prepared long ago.... The four-month period from October 9, 1998 to February 15, 1999 was amazing. No world power except America would have arranged for this entire four-month sweep at that stage. As for the role of the Turkish Special War Forces at that time, it was limited to transferring me to Imrali on a plane under supervision….

The third stage of the leader's life

Regarding the stage of his third life, about which he says, "If it is correct to call it life in name and content," leader Abdullah Ocalan points out in the volume "Defense of People" that "it begins on February 15, 1999 and continues until the end point. Its distinctive feature is the beginning of disconnection from the centered life on the state in general, and on contemporary capitalist life in particular."

He continues his speech, saying, "In the maritime territory of Imrali, I did not give priority to myself, not even for one moment, and I am struggling to continue my biological existence with pain in a narrow space, with self problems. I did not suffer for myself, but I did not accept stabbing from behind for the sake of the people. Despite all the forces of the world have not left us even a tiny glimmer of hope, they have invented good ideas and attitudes for the sake of friends and the people, for the sake of humanity, and they succeeded in doing the impossible, at least, one had to work to be fit for these efforts…."

In the volume "The Kurdish Question and the Solution of the Democratic Nation", the leader says about this stage, "The captivity context in Imrali urged me to understand reality in a deeper and more comprehensive view. That is, the percentage of truth within Imrali context was ahead of what it was in the earlier stages. It made important achievements starting from the abstract level to the concrete one, from the dogmatism to the realism, from the indifference to the sensitivity and the subtlety, from the nationalist state to the democracy, from the economism to the capitalist modernity (capitalist tendency, industrialism and national statehood), from capitalist modernity to democratic modernism, from ideal history to scientific-philosophical history. Islamic mysticism has also dealt with the personality of truth in a wide range, and classified its ranks. The initiation of saying and acting about the fate of nations and societies is closely related to the stages of truth, and is determined according to the ratios of truth based on practical results."

During the various periods that the attorneys of the leader Abdullah Ocalan met with him in Imrali, the leader sent messages to the people about celebrating his birthday, and in one of the letters he sent during the lawyers' meeting with him on April 7, 2010, the leader says, "My birthday has been revived. The more correct is that the issue is not my birthday." The people see it their birth as well. The issue is not my birth in that city, in that village and on that land or not. The people see it as their birth, see it their revival, and greet it because it is their birth. I salute those who went there, those who celebrated the birth and those who made efforts in this field, but they should not empty it of its content."
