With the start of the Turkish attack and the mercenaries of the so-called "Syrian National Army" on the cities of Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî, and their arrival at the outskirts of Zarkan district, the suffering of the people and the villages on the lines of contact with the occupation and its mercenaries began.

The population of Zarkan district is 50 thousand people, of whom more than 28 thousand were displaced after the occupation of Serêkaniyê, and the arrival of the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries to the outskirts of the district.

Zarkan district used to belong to the Serêkaniyê area before its occupation, but it is now administratively affiliated to ed-Dirbasiyah district in al-Hasakah canton, and its countryside consists of 60 villages, of which approximately 25 were occupied.

Zarkan is one of the areas that lie on the lines of contact with the Turkish occupation and the mercenaries of the so-called "Syrian National Army", as they are separated from them by a distance of 1 km.

The district and its villages are exposed to the attacks and shells of the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries on a daily basis. These attacks which are followed by the crimes cause a state of panic and displacement for the people of the villages located on the lines of contact.

With the launch of the July 19th Revolution in 2012 and the declaration of the Autonomous Administration in 2014, the people of the district worked to establish institutions with the aim of serving the people and meeting their needs.

Despite the repeated targeting of the occupier and its mercenaries on a daily basis, the institutions operate according to the capabilities and security conditions available.

On the situation in Zarkan district and its countryside, and the crimes of the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries in the area, our agency met with the Co-chair of Zarkan District Council, Saleh Semmo.

Saleh Semmo said at the beginning of his speech: "With the start of the Turkish aggression against the areas of north and east Syria, in addition to the occupation of Serêkaniyê, and their arrival at the outskirts of Zarkan district, the district has become targeted on a daily basis, especially the populated areas."

Resistance

Regarding the panic caused by the crimes and shelling of the occupation, Semmo said: "The people of Zarkan district used to enjoy security and stability, but after the attacks and shelling they have been living in a state of panic and instability."

He continued saying: "The components of north and east Syria cling to their land despite the state of war in which they are living, and the citizens of Zarkan district have taken the principle of resistance and steadfastness against the occupation and its mercenaries."

All municipalities and councils are on the job

Regarding the work of institutions in the district, Semmo said: "All municipalities and their councils in the district carry out their work on a daily basis, and all members who serve in these institutions are on top of their job, and work day and night in order to fulfill all the services and demands of the people although some villages and towns are only 600 meters far from mercenaries of Turkey."

Saleh Semmo stressed that despite the continuous attacks on Zarkan district, the people still cling to their homes and land.

The Co-chair of Zarkan District Council, Saleh Semmo, called on the people to stand together, support the Democratic Autonomous Administration, and not to be drawn behind the methods of special warfare pursued by the occupation and its mercenaries.
