Amnesty International demands to release 5 prisoners of conscience in Başûr Kurdistan

Amnesty International launched a signatures campaign to demand that the authorities in the Southern Kurdistan region release 5 journalists and activists who were sentenced to prison earlier this month.

On February 16, the Criminal Court in Hewler sentenced journalists and activists, Sherwan Sewani, Omid Saeed, Kohdar Zebari, Ayaz Karam and Harunan Issa to six years in prison, on charges of employment and disturbing security. Which raised the resentment of the social and human rights circles.

In the context, Amnesty International launched a campaign to collect signatures calling for the release of journalists and activists.

The organization said that the five people were subjected to an illegal trial, and called on the Coordinator of International Recommendations in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Dindar Zebari, to work for the release of the detainees.

For her part, Kajal Hami Rashid, a Kurdish activist residing in Kandar, said that the key to the success of the campaign is popular participation.
