Professor at University of Cape Town calls for supporting education in N., E. Syria

The professor at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Mahmoud Batel, explained that the countries occupying Kurdistan have deprived the Kurdish people of exercising their cultural rights with the aim of assimilating them and depriving them of their legitimate rights, he called on the international community to support education in northern and eastern Syria.

The professor at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and expert in international law, Mahmoud Batel, noted during his participation in the Dialogue Forum on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, "The Kurdish people have, for several centuries, been exposed to the policy of deprivation of education in their mother tongue by the countries that occupied Kurdistan."

Batel's participation was through Zoom application in the forum held in Qamishlo on Sunday under the slogan "Education in the mother tongue is a fundamental right for all peoples.”

Mahmoud Batel stated "Ottoman colonialism spread ignorance pursuing to deprive the peoples of the region of their cultures and preventing them from learning in their mother tongue, and the Turkish state continues to pursue this tyrannical policy."

The professor at the University of Cape Town in South Africa stated, "The Kurdish language has declined dramatically as a result of the practices followed by the occupant and colonial countries of Kurdistan for centuries, and the Kurdish people were deprived of learning their own language and practicing their culture."

He Stressed, "it is a systematic policy by the occupying regimes in Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey, and its goal is to assimilate the Kurdish community."

Mahmoud praised education in northern and eastern Syria saying, "The components are learning in their mother tongue after centuries of being denied that."

He appealed to the international community to support education in North and East Syria and to respect international laws and covenants on the right to education in the mother tongue.
