Activists go on hunger strike in Başûr to protest the imprisonment of journalists

Activists from Başûr Kurdistan announced a hunger strike to protest the decision of the courts of the Kurdistan region of Başûr to imprison a number of journalists and activists, and express their support for the hunger strike of prisoners of conscience.

The Hewler Court in Başûr Kurdistan issued sentences of 6 years' imprisonment on five activists and journalists, namely, Şêrwan Şêrwanî, Umêd Seîd, Guhdar Zêbarî, Eyaz Kerem, Harîwan Îsa and Şivan Seîdfor their media work.

According to Roj News Agency, and in solidarity with the journalists who in turn declared a hunger strike in the prisons of the Kurdistan region of Başûr, a number of political activists in the city of Clara in Başûr Kurdistan went on the hunger strike campaign.

Engineer Harim Mahmoud and teacher Ali Mohammad declared a one-week hunger strike, in solidarity with the "hunger strikers in the prisons of the Kurdistan Democratic Party," according to what Mahmoud said in a post on his personal account.

Engineer Hareem Mahmoud wrote on his personal account on the social networking site Facebook: “He announced a hunger strike for a week, in support of the hunger strikers in the prisons of the Justice and Development Party and the Kurdistan Democratic Party. I hope this campaign will put pressure the government.”

Popular reactions are escalating against the decision of Başûr Kurdistan courts against media professionals and journalists, after the Hewler Court issued sentences of 6 years' imprisonment against 5 journalists for their media work.
