The term of Somali President Mohamed Abdullah Farmajo ends on Monday without reaching a political agreement on the mechanism by which to proceed with elections to choose a successor.

In addition, opposition leaders said in a statement, "As of February 8, 2021, the opposition candidate council will not recognize Farmajo as president," adding that the council will not accept any form of extension of the mandate through pressure.

On Saturday, negotiations between Farmajo and the heads of states collapsed brining the election crisis to its first square and tried to evade his responsibility.
