The United States announced imposing new sanctions on Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov and his paramilitary forces for committing "grave violations" of human rights in Chechnya, according to Agence France-Presse.

The US Department of Justice said in a statement: "Kadyrov and the forces he leads, called Kadyrovtsy, are involved in the killing of Boris Nemtsov and in other gross violations of human rights."

Nemtsov, who was a former deputy prime minister, turned out to be an opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and was shot dead in 2015 in Moscow.

For more than ten years, Kadyrov has ruled the Muslim Russian Republic of the Caucasus and the province, which witnessed two separatist conflicts at the end of the 1990s.

The 44-year-old Kadyrov, who has been banned from entering the United States since last July, has already been subject to US sanctions since 2017, but since then, Kadyrovtsy forces, led by Kadyrov, have continued their scandalous activities, such as kidnapping, torturing and killing members of the gay community.
