Two of the participants in a call with the leadership of the German Christian Democratic Union told Reuters that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will participate in a phone call with other European leaders to discuss an initiative against "Islamic extremism" on Tuesday.

The sources told Reuters that the participants in the call, in addition to the German chancellor, are French President Emmanuel Macron, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, European Commission leader Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Charles Michel.

Austria and France have been subjected to bloody attacks in recent weeks, which their leaders have described as "terrorist" acts.
