​​​​​​​Turkey's escalation in eastern Mediterranean makes Europe losing patience

Greek government's Spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Friday in a comment on the ongoing European Council summit in Brussels that Europe's patience appears to be exhausted with Turkey and its renewed escalation in the eastern Mediterranean, according to what was reported by the Greek newspaper of Kathimerini.

Petsas added, speaking to the Greek government ERT station: "The prevailing climate indicates that Turkey has proven its unreliability, and even some countries that believed that Turkey will do what was said contradicts the developments in recent days."

Petsas explained that Athens is seeking to obtain "a set of measures and sanctions so that Turkey understands that Europe is determined to impose sanctions when necessary," making it clear that regardless of Europe, Turkey's actions must be condemned by the United States and Russia as well.

Petsas welcomed a statement issued by the U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden on Thursday, in which the Democratic candidate pledged to "summon Turkish behavior that violates international law or that conflicts with its obligations as a NATO ally" if elected.

Petsas also praised the relationship between Athens and the current U.S. administration, describing it as "constructive."

He stressed that "the United States' attitude is constructive, but we - on our part - must show our calmness at the present time because the American election period can certainly be used by Turkey to cause various disturbances."
