The International Coalition said in a statement: “The International Coalition Forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces, while conducting a routine security patrol related to anti-ISIS operations near the village of Tal Dhahab in Syria, encountered a checkpoint belonging to the forces loyal to the Syrian regime, and after the patrol obtained a safe passage from the forces the pro-regime forces came under small arms fire from individuals near the checkpoint. "

The coalition added: "The coalition troops returned fire in self-defense, and the coalition did not launch an airstrikes, no casualties occured, and the coalition patrol returned to the base and the incident is still under investigation."

The Syrian government agency, SANA, accused the coalition of bombing the checkpoint by air and announced the death of one soldier and wounding two others. It said: "US occupation forces attacked a Syrian army checkpoint southeast of Qamishli, which led to the death of one soldier and wounding two others."
