“We derive our will from historical occasions that emphasize diversity and pluralism”

The Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria issued a written statement on the occasion of the Akitor Day "Assyrian Syriac New Year" which falls on April 1.

The statement stated:

“The first of April is an ancient and historical day celebrated by the Assyrian Syriac people with the beginning of spring and the resurgence of life; this day, which is considered a feast with deep historical implications in the region; A civilization in the whole region, and not only for those who celebrate it, as it is one of the most important occasions that confirm the historical facts that some have long tried to deny.

In the administration of northern and eastern Syria, we extend our highest congratulations to our Assyrian Syriac people on this occasion, and we affirm that we derive from these historical occasions among the various peoples in the region our will that always emphasizes diversity and pluralism and one of the most important factors of our strength as the components and peoples of the region.

The exceptional circumstances and conditions that we are experiencing today, as well as the whole world as a result of the spread of Corona virus, impose on us a commitment to a number of matters and procedures for their public benefit and health interest for our people; we have avoided celebrating all our occasions that coincided with these health measures just as we did in Newruz, however, we remain attached to all our historic occasions, and insist on reviving them with the capabilities always available, and in all circumstances, in our conscience, our culture, our history and our democratic struggle.

We hope that health and safety will prevail throughout our regions and the world at large and that we will meet together on the coming historical occasions, and always make it a strong start to preserve our brothers and our unity and our struggle for stability and obtain the legitimate rights of all the components of our people in the new Syria, democratic, pluralistic and decentralized as a common home for all Syrians.
