"France has made every effort to achieve this result, as the President of the Republic expresses his gratitude to the Iraqi authorities for their cooperation," it said in a brief statement to the presidency carried by the French Press Agency.

The statement noted that the four were kidnapped, without referring to the responsible party, and said: "The President of the Republic welcomes the release of our three nationals, Antoine Broshon, Julian Dietmar, Alexander Godarzi, and the Iraqi Tariq Maatouqa."

The four men work for the non-governmental organization SOS Chretien Durian, which says on its website that it seeks to help Christians in the region.
