The Security Council meeting is expected to begin at 9:00 p.m. GMT, according to the Council's President, the Belgian ambassador, Marc Bixtin de Poitsverf.

He said the meeting came at the request of the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Belgium, Estonia and the Dominican Republic, a number of which had declared support for Turkey.

On Wednesday, nine Security Council members asked Secretary-General António Guterres to "do more" to stop the shooting in Idlib.

Officials said Germany had asked Guterres to go to Syria, but he refused, saying it could have "backlash" and anger Russia, AFP reported.
