Berlin: Tehran's decision to enrich uranium could lead to end of the nuclear deal

German Foreign Minister Heiko Josef Maas said: "Iran's announcement that it will abandon restrictions on uranium enrichment could be the first step towards the end of the nuclear agreement it reached with the six countries in 2015.

"We will definitely talk to Iran again," Maas told Radio Deutschlandfunk. "What has been announced is not consistent with the agreement."

"German, French and British officials will discuss the situation today, Monday," he added.

He continued, "The situation has not become easier, and this may be the first step to end this agreement, which will be a great loss, so we will study this with a very big responsibility now."

On Sunday, Iran revealed the fifth step in the framework of the policy of reducing its obligations related to the nuclear agreement, saying that it would not be bound by any restrictions in its program, while Paris, London and Berlin called on them to respect the agreement concluded in 2015.

In a statement, the Iranian government indicated that it will continue its nuclear program and will not abide by any restrictions regarding uranium enrichment.

But France, Britain, and Germany called on Iran to refrain from any violent act, and urged it to return to respect its obligations, stipulated in its 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers.

The Iranian decision comes days after the assassination of the Commander of Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Major General Qassim Soleimani, in a US raid near Baghdad airport.
