Moscow suspends arms control treaty

Russian news agency Sputnik reported, quoting from Kremlin sources that Russian President Vladimir Putin will suspend the arms control treaty signed with the United States since 1987.

According to the Kremlin, Putin had said that if the United States decided to suspend the nuclear deal, Russia would respond.

He added, "Washington has already violated the nuclear energy agreement."

"The New York Times" newspaper quoted from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as saying that his country will suspend on Saturday its commitment to Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty signed in 1987 with Russia and will withdraw from the historic treaty formally within six months if Moscow did not stop violating the Treaty, and the United States will reconsider withdrawing if Moscow commits to the treaty.

Pompeo confirmed in an interview with reporters that "Russia refuses to take any steps to return to real commitment and can be sure," adding: "We will notify Russia and the parties to the other treaty formally that the United States will withdraw from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, to be effective within six months."
